ICYMI: 2017 is here
…and last week was our First First Friday of the new year!
We warmed up during the snowstorm thanks to a tea (clarification, southerners—hot tea) tasting workshop with Laura Showers from SippaSanity Tea & Events. While we Tennesseans do love our sweet tea, Laura reminded us that the various teas the rest of the world enjoys might have a few health benefits over their powered, sugary steeped counterpart.
During the demo, she taught us novices all about loose leaf tea. She demonstrated tea steeping techniques, passed around tea for smelling and tasting, and then made a few pots of different types for us to enjoy. Each participant also scored some sample tea packs to take for home brewing.
Laura typically carries over 25 different teas and blends from around the world, and we were lucky enough to try the Assam Melody, Earl Grey blend, Vanilla Oolong, Puerh, Rooibos, Green, Herbal blends and even some leftover Christmas spice blend.
Here are some facts and benefits from each of the teas we sampled:
Green, China – typically better after a second steep
Rooibos, Africa – good for skin, hair and digestion
Earl Grey, England – highly caffeinated
Chamomile, India – calming
Herbal Blends – longer steeping time due to whole fruits and flowers
